Blue-cheeked Bee-eater Merops persicus (locally known as Warawa)

Description: approximately 25 centimeters in length, with tail streamers extending up to 33 centimeters. It is almost completely green, with a yellow chin, a black stripe through the eye, blue color above the eye, a blue stripe, and a chestnut throat.

Distribution and Status: this species is a fairly common winter visitor in eastern and southern Sudan from September to May, especially along the long White Nile. Populations in northern Sudan have been recorded breeding, and they appear to be local migrants, with records covering most months of the year.

Habitat: includes areas along rivers in woodlands, floodplains, tall grass, and papyrus swamps.
