Defassa Waterbuck Kobus ellipsiprymnus defassa (Local Name: Katambur)
Description:

Waterbuck is a large antelope, height at shoulder of about 130 centimeters and can weigh up to 270 kilograms. It possesses long, curved horns with a length of up to 95 centimeters, curving forward with ring-like ridges that enhance their strength. The coloration is brown, tending towards grey, with a white elliptical area on the rear of the body under the tail and a white ring on the upper neck. Ears rounded, broad, large, hairy and White inside.  Females are smaller than males, lacking horns, and their bodies are covered with long, coarse hair.

Distribution:

Sub-Sahara Africa in northeastern, central, and western Africa

Distribution in Sudan:

In the past it was common species through south and east Sudan. Recently is only confirmed from Dinder and Radom National Parks.

Habitat:

Woodland savanna and flood plain not far water.  

Habit

Waterbuck live near waters where feed on grasses near rivers and lakes but it can see away from water. It typically living in small herds from 5 t0 20 individuals consisting of females, young, and sub-adults several females, and their offspring. Adult males are territorial which visit females. Young males can expel older males from their territory after defeating them in mating disputes. Territory seeking begins at the age of about five years.
